Dr. Yami's Super Antioxidant Berry Smoothie

Happy Valentine's Day! I hope that you are enjoying 2018 and that you are staying healthy and warm.

It's been a tough season for viruses such as the cold and flu. I have many patients and families often ask me what they should eat to stay healthy or to recover faster from illnesses. My answer is always to emphasize antioxidants. Antioxidants are abundant in whole plant foods, but they are highest in herbs, spices, leafy greens and berries. I routinely advise moms and dads to blend smoothies that have these ingredients for their kiddos. But it wasn't until now that I came up with a delicious recipe that has all of these components and has no added sugar! It's also a beautiful vibrant color that is perfect for Valentine's Day. It has the spice turmeric which has been found in multiple studies to be anti-inflammatory. The herb I chose for this smoothie was mint which lends it a crisp refreshing flavor. Combined with frozen berries, red grapes and leafy greens, this smoothie is packed to the brim with antioxidants.

Try it at home and tell me what you think! I'd love to know how you adapt it to make it your own.

Here's to health and love!

  • 1 can pears in juice
  • 1 cup seedless red grapes
  • 4 leaves mint
  • 1/2 tsp tumeric
  • 2 large handfuls spinach or other greens
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen mixed berries

Method: Blend until smooth. Serves 1-2.

With love and gratitude,

Dr. Yami
